How will the Family and Youth Fund contribute to the future of young people? How will children be protected from virtual dangers? What kind of support and campaigns are coming as part of the Family Year? Very important topics that concern millions of citizens are being discussed on Hafta Sonu.
Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş used the following statements in her explanation:
“My grandfather migrated from Afyon Emirdağ to Belgium in 1969. I was born there. My grandfather was the first Turkish grocer in Belgium. My parents also ran a grocery store. After school, I worked in that store. I worked as a cashier. I arranged fruits and vegetables. It was the beginning of my political career and activation towards society.
After I entered politics, I became a member of parliament. There was no period without obstacles. I was the first veiled member of parliament in Europe. I entered politics to be the voice of the youth. It was an environment with intense prejudices. Minarets were banned in Switzerland and burqas were banned in France.
“UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF OUR PRESIDENT, THESE BANS ARE BEHIND US”
I became a municipal councilor in 2006. When I became a member of parliament in 2009, it was a prejudiced environment. At that time, there was a headscarf ban in Turkey. There was a guardian in Turkey. Our President fought against that guardian. The first veiled member of parliament was able to enter the parliament in 2015. Thanks to God, under the leadership of our President, these bans are behind us. Women are strong in every area of society now. All women are fully equal now. Before that, we couldn’t talk about rights and freedoms. The representation rate of women increased from 4.9% in 2002 to around 20% today. The first veiled female ambassador and the first veiled female governor were appointed in this period. Women can now be appointed as doctors, engineers, or general managers. The rate of female ambassadors was 6.9% in 2002 and is now in the 27% range. The number of female academics and professors has also increased.
